As we all know, the ascension of mobile phone technology as one of the main tools for searching for online content (over 20% of us currently use this method) has taken the way we look for information to a whole new level. Whereas before, we all simply typed in key words into our PC or laptop to get the information we wanted, now more and more of us are simply just asking our phone for it!
Voice-activated technology and digital phone assistants are going to switch things up for marketers, in many beneficial ways. You might think it's just the younger generation keen to take it on, but there is a sizeable number of the 44+ age group actively utilising voice search. This could be down to the hassle of touching smart phone buttons and peering at tiny screens. After all, saying it is a lot easier and quicker! Also, people are becoming much more free and easy about talking to their phones (rather than hiding in a dark corner or whispering under their hand when no-one’s looking) - especially if it's more convenient and saves time.
Because we can. Or, maybe we just like the idea of having an assistant at our beck and call to help us out when we need it, so we can concentrate on the more important things in life. If you think about when you're looking for that all-important eatery to try in a new location, typing in a search would look something like: 'Best Chinese restaurant in Amersham' compared to a voice-based search which might sound like: 'Are there any good Chinese restaurants in Amersham'. As you can see you can add a lot more context to your question which will impact your results. Google will of course pull the best data available, but when it comes to a mobile phone voice search, it will already know where you are located, so can provide more exact information based on your request.
If you're a business owner, your website should already be maximised to tackle Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), but with voice interaction on the rise, and most definitely here to stay, you're going to need to adapt your site - the face of your business - to get it ready for the impending shake-up.
Keyword searches aren’t going to disappear anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean we can simply ignore new tools such as voice interaction. Websites need to get up to speed! Try using more long-tail key words (a short phrase that helps to optimize your content for SEO) for your content and optimize your articles for any ‘instant answers’ feature a search engine like Google provides. Or, you might need to enlist the help of a professional web developer (mentioning no names!)
It's looking a lot like we're going to be incorporating voice interaction and digital assistants more and more into our busy lives, so it's time to embrace it with open arms and not get left behind.
